A young woman of Serbian origin became incontinent at just 19 years old. The reason ? The cap of a hairspray bottle, stuck in her vagina for more than three years after having sex.
The story is so rare that Serbian doctors have reported it in the scientific literature. A 19 year old young woman came to consult because she suffered from urinary incontinence. But more than precocity for such a diagnosis, it is its cause that makes it a singular case.
A plug stuck in her vagina for more than three years
On examination, the doctors discovered the cap of a bottle of lacquer in the young woman’s vagina. After medical examination, she admits that it was introduced more than three years ago in her vagina, during a sexual intercourse with “impaired judgment“. Indeed, it took place while she was drunk. The young woman explains that she tried to withdraw it, without success. For fear of judgment and in the face of the shame she felt, she did not consult of doctor.
Serious complications caused by this foreign body
During all this time, the young woman explains that she kept regular cycles, of normal intensity and every 28 days. But the cork caused major complications for the young woman. “The foreign body was extracted with standard gynecological instruments, then, by placing a urinary catheter, the amputation of the urethra and the presence of a fistula vesico-vaginal were confirmed” report the doctors in the article, published in the journal Journal of Pediatric and adolescent gynecology.
A vesico-vaginal fistula is an opening between the bladder and the vagina, which causes urine to leak through it. An operation is therefore necessary to close this abnormal communication between the two structures. To be treated and managed properly, the patient was referred to urologists.
Be careful not to introduce anything into her vagina
This story brings to mind two important points:
- The fact of not introducing anything into her vagina or any other natural orifice, because it can get stuck. And if it gets stuck for a long time, complications can be serious, with tissues becoming inflamed or even necrotic. It is therefore necessary to turn, in the case of a sexual relationship as for this young girl, to the use of sex toys, which are objects designed for this;
- The second point is not to hesitate to consult, without being overwhelmed by the shame or the judgment that the caregivers could have, because by keeping this foreign body for so long, this young woman suffered serious consequences.
