With “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” a new fantasy film has started in the cinema. MeinMMO editor Benedikt Schlotmann watched the film in the cinema and believes that every gamer should give the film a chance.
What kind of film is this? The new Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is about a thief and a group of rather strange adventurers. Together they undertake a risky heist to recover a lost relic.
But this action goes terribly wrong and triggers a whole series of unexpected events. I don’t want to reveal too much at this point, as the film offers some exciting twists and turns.
My colleague Benedict already explained that the trailer for the film makes you want to play MMORPGs. I’ve included the trailer here for you. And after my visit to the cinema, I can confirm that!
The new film is a feast for gamers and fantasy fans
I’ve already spent quite a few hours playing on the Sword Coast privately. I’ve put in over a thousand hours of play on Baldur’s Gate alone, and I’m adding a few more every year. I was also able to spend many hours playing in “Neverwinter Nights”. Along with namesake Benedict, I even gave Dark Alliance a chance.
The story may not be very original, but the film hits a nerve with its ideas and wit.
Why does this work for me as a gamer? Dungeons & Dragons is one of the most famous and largest role-playing games in the world. As Pen & Paper, it is actually played at the table with character sheets, narrator and dice. But the new film “Ehre unter Thieben” skillfully manages to tell a fun story from these elements:
All characters of the story take on a typical role from an RPG party in the film:
And they all have their typical recognition value: the paladin, for example, wears shiny armour, the bard always carries an instrument on his back, while the warrior always has the ax within reach. I encounter all familiar role-playing clichés in this chaotic but loveable party.
And that just fits right. I have the feeling all the time that “could” be my party, which I’m running through a dungeon with, sometimes more or less successfully.
In one scene, an adventuress is surprised by a facial expression, a monster disguised as a treasure chest. In another scene you have to deal with a gelatinous cube, which some of you have probably already met.
In another scene, there’s a slightly…interesting dragon. But you have to see it for yourself.
As a gamer, you feel right at home because many aspects just seem familiar right away. And after the movie I just feel like digging up my old Baldurs Gate and going on adventures with my party again.
But without a bard, because I can hardly ever do anything with him:
Heck, Baldur’s Gate 3’s multiplayer is really good!
