A headscarf-less Iranian woman and her mother who shopped in the store got yogurt on them in Mashad. According to Iranian law, the wearing of the hijab is mandatory, but many women break it as an outdated rule.
Iran has required women to wear a hijab, i.e. a scarf that covers the hair and neck. It became compulsory for all women in Iran in 1983.
Conservatives still want to keep the use of the headscarf mandatory, but reformists would like to remove the legal obligation and leave it up to the individual to decide.
The topic has been discussed in the Iranian parliament during the winter.
Locally, attitudes against loosening the dress code seem to be tightening.
A video by the Reuters news agency shows how a mother and daughter who shopped at a store in Mashhad get yogurt on them. A customer shopping in the store at the same time throws yogurt first on the daughter without a scarf, then on the mother wearing a scarf.
President of Iran Ebrahim Farsi says that disciplinary measures may be taken in the near future.
– If people do not share our belief in the mandatory use of the hijab, there are places in science and culture centers and schools where they can be discussed and convinced of the importance of the matter, the president said.
Iran has been rocked by protests that broke out after a young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini died at the hands of the chastity police in October.
