Local tea room preparing to celebrate coronation of King Charles

The coronation of a British Monarch is a rare occurrence and the owner of a Chatham tea room is going to make sure it is celebrated locally.

Wanda Bell, owner of Mrs. Bell’s Tea Room, is planning an afternoon tea with three seating’s on May 6 to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III when he is officially crowned at West Minister Abbey in London.

When Bell opened her tea room six months ago, she wasn’t thinking about having an event to mark the coronation of King Charles.

But being an Anglican, she said the prayers said in her church changed to refer to the ‘King’ after Queen Elizabeth II passed away Sept. 8, 2022.

“I’m thinking about it, hearing his name all the time – King Charles – then I saw the recent announcement from (Prime Minister) Justin Trudeau that they’re going to do something in Ottawa (to celebrate the coronation),” Bell said.

She added Trudeau also stated: “I invite Canadians to take part in events and activities that will take place in their communities to mark this important occasion. Together, we look to the future and the continued betterment of the Commonwealth and its people.”

Bell saw the coronation as a perfect opportunity to hold a celebration “because what is more British than afternoon tea?”

Noting she’s had success with Christmas, Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day events, Bell thought, “I’m doing this.

“I envision that this could be one of the most memorable teas I host because, as you know, coronations don’t come along every day,” she added.

Bell is excited to be hosting a coronation event at her Tea Room at 11 Third St., noting all the gold trimmed cups and saucers will be used that day and each table will hold both a Canadian and Union Jack flag.

“My afternoon tea includes dainty finger sandwiches, buttery scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, and delightful sweets, and of course, tea,” she said.

“King Charles sips Darjeeling Tea so that has been added to my regular varieties,” she added.

Seating’s are being planned for 11 am to 12:30 pm, 1 pm to 2:30 pm and 3 pm to 4:30 pm Although it is a special occasion, Bell said the cost will remain at her regular price of $29.99.

Bell said her tea room only has six tables, so reservations are required. Reservations can be made online at www.mrsbellstearoom.comby calling 226 627-0248, or through Eventbrite.
