“Although the situation is not as serious by a long shot as in Northern Norway, we also have a dangerous snow cover in some areas that are close to the Norwegian border, for example Kirunafjällen,” says Mattias Tarestad at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s avalanche forecast service in a press release.
The increasing avalanche danger is due to weather changes. After a period of clear and cold weather, it has been snowing and windy this week, but the new snow does not bond well to the old.
In the area of Tromsö in northern Norway, four people died in avalanches on Friday. The avalanche danger is graded at 4, which means very dangerous conditions.
