So far responsible for the executives’ union, Sophie Binet was elected Friday general secretary of the CGT to replace Philippe Martinez at the 53rd confederal congress of the central trade union.
A dramatic turn of events at the General Confederation of Workers, after a stormy week of congress, in the midst of a battle against pension reform. To everyone’s surprise, it was neither of the two candidates approached until then who was elected after a night of negotiations. Ni Marie Buisson, the candidate supported by the outgoing Philippe Martinez and Secretary General of the Education Research Culture Federation, nor Celine Verzelettico-general secretary of the Federal Union of State Trade Unions and favorite of the opponents of the current secretary general’s team, did not manage to reach a consensus on their name.
It is therefore Sophie Binet, secretary general of the Federation of executives (Ugict) Sophie Binet, who becomes secretary general of the CGT. She will be the first woman to hold this position since the creation of the organization in 1895. Born in 1982, she is a former member of the Unef student union and former CPE (Principal Education Advisor). She had been at the head of Ugict since 2018.
