The potential charge against Trump is related to his role as an adult entertainment actor by Stephanie Clifford (under stage name Stormy Daniels) to remain silent on the payment during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Clifford allegedly had a relationship with Trump, which Trump has denied. Trump, who spoke at his first presidential campaign event in Texas on Saturday, denied having committed the crime.
“The New York District Attorney, under the auspices and direction of the Washington Department of Justice, is investigating me for something that is not a crime, not a misconduct, not a relationship,” Trump told supporters in Waco.
Trump told thousands of supporters in attendance that he was the victim of yet another “witch hunt” and bogus investigation.
Trump would be the first president to be criminally indicted
A jury in New York was initially rumored to have decided on the matter as early as last week. Trump himself said the previous weekend on social media that he would have been arrested already on Tuesday. New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg later said in a letter to three Republican lawmakers that Trump had made baseless claims about the arrest.
If Trump is indicted, he will become the first US president to face criminal charges. However, an indictment or even a conviction would not prevent Trump from resuming his bid for the presidency.
