In the Finnish film Sisu enters Gold diggers against a horde of Nazis and the result is no-frills action entertainment. Yesterday the German trailer for the film by Jalmari Helander (Rare Exports – Eine Weihnachtsgeschichte) was released and we have good news: Sisu has a regular German theatrical release.

The action film is set in Finland during World War II
The year is 1944, the so-called Lapland War is raging in Finland. The Germans, former allies of the Finns, are to be expelled from the country on the orders of the Soviet Union. They leave behind scorched earth, blown up bridges, destroyed villages. Our bearded hero (Jorma Tommila) seems unaffected at first. In the vastness of northern Europe he digs in the ground. He’s looking for gold. One day his tireless pickaxe strikes a vein of gold.
When he is about to leave, satisfied with his find, he encounters SS remnants. They discover that he is transporting gold and sense their chance. But the Obersturmfuhrer (Aksel Hennie) didn’t count on the resilience of the Finn. Namely, the title “Sisu” refers to a specifically Finnish type of fighting spirit or perseverance. That’s what the SS men have to deal with.
Sisu is finally coming to Germany
Sisu was screened at the Sitges Film Festival last year, where it impressed with its sparse story and tough action. That is reminds the story of Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo. Nevertheless, the action film quickly develops into a very idiosyncratic Finnish beast in the lowlands. Sisu will be in German cinemas on May 11th. In April the film will be screened in several German cities at the Fantasy Filmfest Nights.
