Police investigating assault on North Park student

A North Park Collegiate student injured Thursday in an “altercation” at the school is now resting at home.

“A parent of the student has allowed us to confirm the student returned home,” Dave Smouter, communications manager for the Grand Erie District School Board, said Friday afternoon. “There is an ongoing police investigation into this incident, and we are co-operating fully with that investigation.”

North Park’s principal Susan Noort sent an email to parents Thursday afternoon describing the incident as “unsettling” and added there was no threat to other students in the school during or following the incident.

“Medical attention was sought immediately and police were called to the school,” she said.

The assault took place inside the school during the lunch period.

Smouter said there was no police liaison officer in the school at the time.

“With the onset of COVID-19, the liaison officer program was put on pause, to reduce potential exposures and due to the learning pivots we’ve experienced at various points in time,” he said. “We continue to stay connected with our local police services, and our police protocol outlines engagement with police in specific circumstances.”

Brantford police said Friday an investigation into the assault is ongoing.
