A strong earthquake lasting at least 30 seconds was felt in large parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of India on Tuesday evening Swedish time. According to the United States Geological Survey USGS, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.5.
“People ran out of their houses and quoted the Koran,” said a correspondent from the AFP news agency in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi. Similar information also came from other parts of the country and Afghanistan.
The USGS reports that the quake was centered near Jurm in northeastern Afghanistan and had a depth of 187 kilometers.
Initially, there were no reports of injuries.
Afghanistan is often hit by earthquakes. In connection with an earthquake in June last year, over 1,000 people lost their lives and tens of thousands became homeless. That quake had a magnitude of 5.9.
