March is the high season for stones thrown in traffic and according to figures from the insurance industry, the number of glass damage to vehicles has increased sharply in recent years. Something that in the long run can lead to higher premiums. – Make sure to repair the rockfall immediately, says Stefan Brala, product specialist at the insurance company Trygg-Hansa. It happens in the blink of an eye – a stone thrown into the windshield – and according to statistics from the insurance industry, increasingly often. Last year, over 545,000 glass damages were reported to the companies, an increase of almost 50 percent in ten years. The 2022 figure is the highest so far, after a temporary decline during the pandemic years when more people worked from home. Stronger tires Stronger tires, lack of fenders on today’s cars and larger and thinner windshields are mentioned as contributing factors. And the trend now risks affecting our insurance premium. – Glass damage is by far the most common type of damage with insurance companies, says Stefan Brala. – Based on this development that we see now, with an increased number of repairs and glass replacements, it can have an impact on the insurance premium. But also perhaps on the deductibles. This means that the insurance companies may raise the deductibles in the future.
