After several trips to the city council, the announcement comes that there will be no reshuffles in Gothenburg – this after the red-green board reached an agreement with the Center Party. – Now the tenants can breathe a sigh of relief. The tenancies will remain in Gothenburg, says Jonas Attenius (S), chairman of the municipal board. During the last term of office, the then bourgeois government in Gothenburg opened the way for changes in the entire city. Before the last election, the red-green parties came out and said that the changes should be stopped. However, both sides have lacked a majority to be able to implement the respective reform. But now the red-greens and the Center Party have agreed to stop the changes during the remainder of the term. From now on, a municipal tenancy cannot be bought off and transformed into a condominium. – Now an ordinary worker has the opportunity to stay in central Gothenburg. It is important not to create a large residential segregation. It won’t be like in Stockholm, says Jonas Attenius. Remodeling does not solve the housing shortage According to Jonas Attenius, it is still important to have different forms of housing, but it is not through remodeling that you get rid of the lack of housing, he believes. – We have a large housing shortage and we must eliminate it. Conversions do not create a single new home. It is important to remember. The moderates: “It’s depressing” Axel Josefson (M), opposition councilor and second vice-chairman of the municipal board, is critical of the reorganization stop. – We need to build more detached houses and tenements, but we also need to be able to redevelop – above all in the areas that are completely dominated by tenements and where we have major security problems, he says. So retraining increases security? – Yes, our investments in Tynnered have shown that, and housing companies also say that it is an important tool to be able to increase security, especially in vulnerable areas. At the same time, he aims a boot at the Center Party. – It is distressing that they have agreed to this and continue to sell bourgeois politics. There are also many residents of Gothenburg who want to own their own home, so I think it’s very sad, he says.
