Sometimes it seems like there were no Marvel movies before the turn of the millennium. Spider-Man, X-Men and Blade (present, it’s from 1998) are among the pioneers of the Superhero Boomswhich we’ve been witnessing for over two decades and has been fueled by the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
However, as we delve into film and television history, some attempts—sometimes extremely curious—of very early Marvel films come to light. You can currently see one of these films on Netflix: the 90-minute pilot film the TV series The Incredible Hulk, which aired on CBS from 1977 to 1982.

Long before Marvel characters enjoyed success after success on screen, the Hulk ventured onto television and was welcomed with open arms. Five seasons followed on the pilot around the green rage monster. In the cinema, the Hulk had a much harder time until he could really gain a foothold.

The 1977 Hulk is more involved in many moments Universal Monster Movies from the 1930s such as Frankenstein’s Bride than with modern superhero cinema. That’s why it’s worth a look: Here you can learn a lot about the development of comic adaptations in film and television.
Particularly exciting: The main character is from a total four actors brought to life. While Bill Bixby as scientist Dr. David Banner appears, Lou Ferrigno embodies the pounding colossus. The rampage was voiced by Ted Cassidy (pilot, seasons 1-2) and Charles Napier (seasons 2-5).
