EMILY FILM. Fake biopic on the author of “Les Hauts de Hurlevent”, the film “Emily” was released in theaters this Wednesday, March 15, 2023. We saw it, and we recommend it to you. Our review.
[Mis à jour le 15 mars 2023 à 09h30] The English Landes in the 19th century. A wild and rebellious young woman who searches for her place in the world and lives a passionate and forbidden romance. The film Emily, which is part of the theatrical releases of March 15, 2023, is a film not to be missed for all fans of English literature. First film directed by Frances O’Connor, it is a true-false biopic on Emily Brontë, who does not bother with verisimilitude and historical realism, but rather seeks to understand how the reclusive young girl in Yorkshire with her pastor father could write Wuthering Heightsone of the most innovative British novels for its time.
So, Emily strays from the real life of the youngest Brontë. Thus, it would seem that the novelist has never had a torrid romance with a young pastor, or at least it is not attested (the suspicions would rather relate to her sister, Anne Brontë). But this comes to explain how a young woman who would not have, it seems, lived a romance could imagine the passionate story of Heathcliff and Catherine, the protagonists of her novel. Fans of accuracy may be unsettled, but the metaphorical poetry that emanates from the staging offers a fresh and almost magical look at its romance and its mysterious author.
In the title role, Emma Mackey (Sex Education, Eiffel) is magnetic. The 27-year-old actress is of all plans and can express the extent of her talent. Lovers of English literature will find what they are looking for, others will be able to get caught up in the performance as an actress, immerse themselves in the mystique of the English moors, and better understand one of the greatest works of the 19th century. But if you’re looking for a formal biopic that accurately traces the life of the youngest Brontë, Emily may not be for you.
