Norfolk County celebrates International Womens Day

Norfolk County celebrated International Women’s Day on Wednesday, March 8 with a day of community engagement at the Town Hall in Simcoe.

“I think it’s important for our corporation to acknowledge the influence that women have in our corporation,” said Norfolk County Ward 7 Coun. Kim Huffman. “We have some female GMs, engineers, directors, managers, and lots of frontline staff who are women and represent us very well.”

Event speakers included Mayor Amy Martin, Huffman, Heidy Van Dyk, Sarah Page, and Mariana Balaban.

Huffman said there was a lot of feedback from the community, and interest in celebrating International Women’s Day. In addition to celebrating with staff, Norfolk County invited several community women, including high school students, business entrepreneurs, educators, and nurses for an afternoon event.

“We just had staff here this morning and it was full – it was amazing,” said Huffman. “We’re hoping to build on this every year.”

“It’s important to make time to celebrate women across our community,” said Mayor Martin. “I think it’s important to demonstrate representation. We have a great team of staff here, men included, who helped us to celebrate and encourage leaders across our corporation and our community. It’s a great day to celebrate Norfolk.”
