The French upper house, the Senate, said late on Saturday yes to the French government’s controversial pension reform proposal which, among other things, raises the retirement age from 62 to 64 years.

The proposal was voted through with 195 votes to 112 and the reform is now one step closer to being implemented.

The vote was carried out just hours after tens of thousands of French once again gathered in various places in the country to protest against the pension reform. However, the demonstrations on Saturday gathered fewer participants than before.

– An important stage has been passed, said Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne after the vote.

She added that, in her view, there is now the parliamentary majority required for the reform proposal to be implemented and become law.

A committee will now formulate and present a final proposal which will be submitted to both houses of Parliament for a vote.
