The swimmer died on Wednesday in Sydney, Australia, after being attacked by a shark.
The paramedics were alerted to the shores of Little Bay in the afternoon, but when they arrived, nothing could be done. According to ambulance staff, the person found in the water had suffered “catastrophic injuries.”
Authorities have not yet provided information on the victim’s age or gender.
Sky News Australia said the accident happened at about half past five local time. There were dozens of people in the water swimming and snowboarding.
– Some guy was swimming when a shark came and attacked him straight from below, one eyewitness told local Nine News TV channel.
– We heard a shout and when we turned to look, it looked as if the car had appeared in the water, he continued.
The beach is closed for the time being.
Another eyewitness told the ABC news channel he saw the attack while fishing on nearby cliffs.
– At first there was a shout and then the water splashed a lot as he sank down, the fisherman described.
Globally, nine people are reported dead in a shark attack last year.
