In the midst of a shortage of components – and therefore of graphics cards – here is an announcement that could please gamers: Intel should deliver 4 million GPUs for gamers during the year 2022. This first generation of chip codenamed “ Alchemist” will be available in three segments: mobile, desktop and workstations.

The first Intel GPUs dedicated to laptops will arrive in the first quarter, dedicated graphics cards for consumer towers in the second quarter and it is only in the third quarter that the cards for professional towers will arrive.
In a market that sells 48 million desktop GPUs per year, the 4 million chips seem very little. But it is an additional production – and technological competition! – which remains welcome given the “war” that buying a GPU represents these days. Between prices that are still too high and shelves that empty in 10 minutes, Alchemist could be a real success… if the price/performance ratio is there…
“Celestial” attacking the very high end
In addition to the launch of its cloud computing service – or cloud gaming? – Project Endgame, Intel also revealed when it wants to enter the arena of very high-end chips: from its “Celestial” architecture, ie its third generation of GPU. The order is indeed alphabetical: the first generation is Alchemist, then will come Battlemage, Celestial and then Druid.

If we count 12 to 18 months of life per generation as is the case with the competition, we must therefore wait until 2024, or even 2025 to see a third thief arrive against Nvidia and AMD in the very prestigious GPU segment. very high-end gamers – represented today by the Radeon 6800XT/6900XT and the GeForce RTX 3080/3090/3090Ti.
