Icon Torgny Mogren’s emotional words – in grief after the tragic news: “Feels incredibly difficult”

Åsarna Ski Center has burned down.
The icon Torgny Mogren is in mourning.
– It feels incredibly difficult, he tells P4 Jämtland.

Torgny Mogren was one of the skiers who helped start Åsarna Skicenter. The ski club has been the home club of many of Sweden’s greatest athletes of all time, such as Mogren, Thomas Wassberg and Jan Ottosson. Currently, skaters such as William Poromaa and Jens Burman are also active in the club.

Great grief

That is why so many mourned on Wednesday. During Tuesday night, emergency services were called to the club’s Ski Center, where a large fire had broken out. It could not be stopped, and the Ski Center could not be saved, and thus a lot of history also disappeared.

Torgny Mogren remembers how it all began, how he, together with Wassberg among others, began the construction of the Ski Centre.

– I think we were sitting in Åre and then it was Wassberg who had an idea about this. We came to the conclusion that: We drive! We took part in taking the first sod and shoveling shingles to the small house that was built first, and then expanded. There are a lot of memories there, he tells P4 Jämtland.

“Feels incredibly hard”

Torgny Mogren looks back on many memories in the Ski Centre, and it was a historic place that burned down, and now no longer exists.

– It is clear that it feels incredibly difficult that it has disappeared. Such a nice place.

In the house there was also a museum where medals, trophies and other memorabilia – such as old skis – were found. Fortunately, the medals on site were only copies, but once the house is rebuilt, Mogren is not sure what he can contribute.

– Now there aren’t that many left. They are probably gone, almost all of them. I have one left, standing, some world cup trophy somewhere. There isn’t much left.

No people were injured in the fire.
