Acer was the victim of a major cyberattack in February. A hacker has managed to get his hands on some 160 GB of data, which he is now trying to resell on the Dark Web. Something to panic the manufacturer’s customers…
Acer is once again the target of hackers! Already in March 2021, the computer manufacturer was the victim of the REvil ransomware – an attack which ended with a ransom of 50 million dollars –, then was offloaded from 16 GB of its confidential customer data in October 2021, before the identifiers of the Acer Taiwan employee login being robbed the same week. It is therefore a new blow to the company which admits that, in February of this year, a hacker rushed into a server hosting sensitive documents used by technicians, as reported Bleeping Computer.
Acer Hack: User Data Would Fear Nothing
The cybercriminal put up for sale on a notorious Dark Web forum 160 GB of sensitive documents, including technical manuals, software tools, back-end infrastructure details, product model documentation for phones, tablets and laptops, BIOS images, ROM files, ISO files, and replacement digital product keys (RDPK). He asks to be paid in Monero (XMR), a hard-to-trace cryptocurrency.
Asked by Bleeping Computeur, an Acer spokesperson confirmed the data breach while assuring that customers need not worry.“We recently detected unauthorized access to one of our repair technician document servers”says the company. “The investigation is continuing, but there is no indication at this time that any consumer data has been stored on this server.” On the other hand, the situation is more serious for Acer, who may fear that this information will end up with the competition or in the hands of even more uncaring people.
