According to the plan, the Swedish Transport Administration is expected to finance Västerå’s new travel center with SEK 600 million in the first stage. Now 95 million of them are secured and will go towards building a new railway yard with staging tracks where trains can be placed. Today, that function exists at the existing station, but the idea is that the new railway yard should be located at Västerås Västra, beyond Hammarby.
– It is an important step to move the staging track to Västerås Västra so that we can jointly start the construction of a new travel center in the city, says Rami Yones, regional director in the east region at the Swedish Transport Administration.
The money finally arrived
The rebuilding of Västerås’ new alignment track was not included in the national transport plan for infrastructure funding, but the Swedish Transport Administration found a solution when the money could be taken from a so-called regional trimming fund. The start of construction is budgeted for 2028, but there is a possibility that it will take place earlier than that.
– That we have come this far is the result of close cooperation over several years with the city of Västerås and Region Västmanland, to arrive at the best solution, says Rami Yones.
