South Korea is to raise funds to compensate the civilians who slaved for Japanese companies during World War II.

Seoul wants to get closer to Tokyo and have a common front against North Korea, and the announcement is part of those efforts.

The decision is expected to draw criticism at home, where the Supreme Court ruled in 2018 that Japanese companies should pay compensation to victims and their families. Something that led to deteriorating relations between the countries.
