The Candyman is one of the scariest characters in the horror genre and Candyman’s Curse is one of the biggest horror films of the 90’s. Tony Todd delivered a real tour de force as Candyman.
In one iconic scene, the actor put over 100 real bees in his mouth. He had it only one condition to director Bernard Rose.
Horror cult film Candyman’s Curse: Hundreds of bees in the mouth for $ 1,000 a sting
Whenever bees appear in the horror classic Candyman’s Curse, the Candyman with his hooked arm isn’t far behind. Young Daniel Robitaille’s backstory couldn’t be more tragic. Not only was he a victim of pure racism, he even had to pay with his life.

Tony Todd in Candyman’s Curse
After his Death from countless bee stings he became a terrifying figure that spreads pure terror. These same bees were not computer animated in 1992.
For a single scene, the Candyman actor took a total several hundred bees in the mouth. His only condition was that he wanted $1,000 for every stab he suffered.
Speaking to ET Online, Todd revealed how many stitches he received:
I didn’t mind the bee scenes. Let’s get started – I said simply and at least on these days of shooting: It was only 27 stitches. I had a great lawyer at the time and we got paid.
Depending on the interview, there are different statements from Todd. But there are always between 23 and 27 bee stings for which he was handsomely rewarded.
Tony Todd wore a protective gear while filming the horror film
Todd had a mouthguard at the said scene, so that the bees could not get into the esophagus. The hardest part of the shoot was removing all the bees. This took 45 minutes. A tiny suction cup was used, according to an interview with Horrornews Network.
A total of 200,000 real bees were even used for another film scene in Candyman’s Curse.
