LoL: Team has 2 stars but only one plays

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

In League of Legends, there was a bizarre situation with the European team Fnatic. You had two world-class ADCs on your team, but you had a terrible season. For the Swede, Martin “Rekkles” Larsson, an intolerable situation: he was afraid of being replaced by the German upset if he faltered. Now Fnatic is resolving the situation: Upset will apparently switch to Team Vitality.

That was the situation:

  • For years Rekkles played for Fnatic, was the regular ADC there and became one of the most important figures in the European League of Legends, he became a legend. But then the Swede switched to G2 – Fnatic replaced him with German player Upset, who led the team for 2 years.
  • Last season, however, Rekkles came back to Fnatic, Upset was relegated to the bench.
  • But without the German, things didn’t go well for Fnatic, they played an extremely weak season and ended disastrously as penultimate.

Too strong replacement player unsettled Rekkless – demands clarity

This is what Rekkles said: The Swede Rekkles recently made it clear in a Twitch stream that the situation with Upset doesn’t work for him:

According to Rekkles, there was uncertainty throughout the season, nobody was really sure of their position. He always felt Upset on the back of his neck.

After the season, the situation became even more difficult:

  • According to Rekkles, Fnatic had been in touch with Upset if he would be back in the roster
  • An expert had suggested that Upset should become a regular ADC again, Rekkles could play “range supporter” (via dotesports)

Rekkles says: The situation with Upset was difficult for him. As long as Upset was there, Rekkles felt that if something went wrong, he would be benched and play Upset. When he then heard that Fnatic was talking to Upset, it hit him:

This caught me out of nowhere, although of course it makes sense, the guy is damn good. I told Fnatic I need a commitment that Upset 2023 won’t play for them because otherwise it doesn’t make sense for me to commit here… They then gave me the commitment, that’s why I felt so empty [als er gehört hat, dass sie mit Upset sprechen]. I wasn’t sad or angry, just felt empty.

Rekkles explained that it was a strange situation anyway, with Upset sitting on the bench because he’s just so “fucking good”.

    Upset apparently joins Team Vitality

This happened immediately afterwards: After Rekkles expressed his concerns in a stream about what it was like to feel Upset on the neck, the situation resolved.

  • There was an inside report that Upset is moving to Team Vitality, Perkz’s team, for the next split.
  • Upset has already posted a “bee” as confirmation.

Meanwhile, Team Vitality’s current ADC, Neon, asks his teammate Selfmade what it’s like to be on the bench. “Cold and it gets you down,” writes Selfmade. He too had been exchanged at Team Vitality.

Looks like Upset will soon be playing alongside the other huge legend in European LoL, alongside Perkz. For them it was only mixed last year:
