The former striker was 89 years old and the immediate family confirms his death, reports the AFP news agency. The Frenchman will forever be remembered for the unbeaten record he broke during the 1958 World Cup in Sweden.

Then Fontaine scored an improbable 13 goals in just 6 matches in the World Cup and to this day no other footballer has managed to beat the matchless goal record. The Frenchman is also tied for fourth place with Lionel Messi over the most World Cup goals ever, despite only playing one World Cup.

French legend
Fontaine scored a total of 30 goals in 21 caps for France, despite being born in Morocco. To this day, he is seen as one of French football’s greatest players of all time.

Just Fontaine ended his playing career as a 29-year-old in 1962 and then began a coaching career. As a player he has represented clubs such as Casablanca, Reims and Nice, as a coach he has led PSG, Toulouse and the Moroccan national team.
