“We absolutely can do it!”

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Sweden’s start at the World Ski Championships is nothing short of magical.
Now they are going hard for Norway – and revealing the big dream.
– It is absolutely possible, says Maja Dahlqvist.

Sweden were huge favorites in the sprint when the ski WC began, but no one had dared to dream that there would be blue and yellow skiers in first, second, third and fourth place. The incredible start was followed up with another gold a few days later for Ebba Andersson, where Frida Karlsson also won silver.

Cocky greeting

Sweden were, understandably, also gigantic favorites in the sprint relay – and there Jonna Sundling and Emma Ribom held the pressure, as they took Sweden’s third gold in as many attempts. On Tuesday, the 10 kilometer race in the WC awaits, and a new big chance for Sweden.

Sweden are also huge favorites in Thursday’s relay, and then only the final three miles remain. Sweden now has a clear dream after the incredible start at the WC – namely to win six out of six golds on the women’s side.

– We can absolutely take six golds, says Maja Dahlqvist, who got one of the Swedish starting places in Tuesday’s race, according to VG.

Norway’s response

The pass came directly to Norway, and it would of course be a real killer blow for our neighboring country if Sweden succeeded in the feat. And in Norway it is now where you find the motivation; to stop Sweden.

– They can still win six golds, that’s why they are big favourites. They will probably be the hardest to beat, but we are motivated by the fact that they are so good. We will join and fight, says Norwegian coach Stig Rune Kveen.

It has been 14 years since a Norwegian national ski team went home without a single WC gold on the women’s side. But now is the time, say the Swedish stars.

– It would have been absolutely fantastic. We got off to a good start, and based on how things have gone so far, there are great opportunities, says Jonna Sundling, who is also competing on Tuesday, just like Dahlqvist, Frida Karlsson and Ebba Andersson.
