A man in his 30s has been sentenced by Östersund’s district court to three years in prison for having deprived a woman of her liberty last fall and subjected her to several violent crimes, local media reports.

In November, the convict forced his way into a man’s home in Strömsund municipality and beat him unconscious. He then forced a woman from the home to his car. He drove to a stream where he repeatedly pushed her head under the surface of the water and kicked her in the head, according to the prosecutor’s indictment, which the district court therefore accepted.

In addition to unlawful deprivation of liberty, the man is also convicted of gross breach of domestic peace, aggravated assault and battery, and unlawful coercion. Fines and damages are added.

Behind the outbreak of violence is a custody dispute. The man defended himself by saying that he acted in self-defense.
