Warning, spoilers follow: The Last of Us delves into Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) past with Episode 7. The post-apocalyptic teen love story set in an abandoned mall also introduces us for the first time to her best friend Riley (Storm Reid). But this chapter is still part of a series that breaks our hearts with tragic deaths almost week after week. Only this time it ends unexpectedly.

At the end of Left Behind, fans are left with a devastating cliffhanger. For the inevitable fate of the infected Riley is withheld from us. That leaves some open questions. Why does the story end so abruptly?but for a good reason.

The Last of Us Episode 7: Why we don’t get to see Riley’s death

During their trip to an abandoned mall, two friends, Ellie and Riley, encounter a fateful tragedy encounter with an infected person, which infects both teenage girls with the Cordyceps fungus. It’s an absolutely tragic moment when they realize that all their plans for the future have fizzled out and they doomed to die are.

The flashback chapter ends with Ellie and Riley weighing their options. You could take your own life with a gun on the spot and avoid an agonizing transformation. But then he follows abrupt cliffhangers. How and when does Riley transform? Does Ellie have to kill her? The outcome of their shared story is left to our imagination, which actually makes the ending even more tragic. We ourselves have to fill the narrative gap.

With the decision not to show Riley’s ultimate fate, The Last of Us follows the lead of the video game or the DLC (Downloadable Content) Left Behind. This expansion of the first game serves as a template for the latest installment and also ended without a direct resolution.

In the end, she reveals that it wasn’t her first time.

We don’t know how much time passed between Riley’s bite infection and her death. It could have been hours or even days. Did the girls come out of the mall? Did they visit the Fireflies and Marlene together? It’s all left to our interpretations. concrete We will not receive any answers.

But one thing is certain: Riley will not have survived. Aside from Ellie, no person is known to have survived a bite. One definitive confirmation that already provided the video game template for this.

Warning, spoilers for the end of The Last of Us game: At the very end of the first game, Ellies speaks Riley’s name for the first time in the presence of Joel. She explains to him that she was the first person close to her to die.
