Almost 20 years ago, the first Lord of the Rings trilogy ended with The Return of the King. Peter Jackson’s three Middle-earth films broke records and set a new standard for fantasy blockbusters. Responsible for the Lord of the Rings and later The Hobbit trilogy were Warner Bros. and New Line.
On Thursday at one official investor meeting announced that the studio partners are returning to Middle-earth: new films are officially planned. The Hollywood Reporter reports.
What exactly is behind the new Lord of the Rings films
Last year, the first Lord of the Rings series, Rings of Power, was released on Amazon, and four more seasons are planned. The films planned by Warner have nothing to do with the series. This is due to the complicated rights situation around the Tolkien world. Warner had to strike a multi-year deal with Sweden’s Embracer Group to get the rights to produce more films. Amazon, in turn, agreed to the TV rights with the powerful Tolkien Trust. The streaming service is therefore allowed to produce its series.
Why is this important for the new films? Well, different time sections of the Middle-earth saga and therefore also different characters hang on the right hand side.
What could the Lord of the Rings movies be about?

The Lord of the Rings series is set in the Second Age. We only see slowly aging characters like Elrond and Galadriel, who later also play a role in the events of the cinema trilogy. The film rights relate to the Third Age: Characters like Frodo, Bilbo and Aragorn cavort here. The new Warner films will most likely bring back these beloved characters and continue, pre-tell, enrich their stories.
What exactly Warner and New Line plan to do is not known. Only, that we know for sure that new films are coming. How many films are to be released, who will be involved, in front of and behind the camera, is still open, as is a launch.
The Middle-earth anime The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will be released before Season 2 of the Lord of the Rings series (probably in autumn 2024). On April 11, 2024 the time has come.
