It’s no secret that Ellen Pompeo has been thinking about leaving Grey’s Anatomy for years. We have known since last fall that their farewell will take place in season 19. Despite past promises, the series continues without its main character. Well became Meredith’s farewell episode broadcast in the USA – and instead of great feelings only spreads boredom.

Grey’s Anatomy – S19E7 I’ll Follow The Sun Promo (English) HD
In the always before Grey’s Anatomy episode of the spin-off series Seattle Firefighters, Meredith stands in front of her burning house. The last bridge is symbolically demolished. In the subsequent, final farewell episode, Episode 7 of Season 19 (I’ll Follow the Sun), the doctor is absent for long periods, while others want to get us excited that they’re saving a baby. Just the day-to-day business. We only see Meredith having a fight with her current lover, Dr. Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), who doesn’t know if he wants to tell her “I love you” and follow her to Boston. In the end he rushes after her to the airport, misses the moment and has to make his declaration of love over the phone.
Oh yes: Ten minutes before the end, the assembled hospital staff throws Meredith another one short farewell party, where her longest companions Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) can’t find the right words. Anyway, one remains back door to return open (a guest appearance is already confirmed, probably at the end of season 19). Because Meredith announces in her speech that she “Probably stop by again next week” becomes. And then she’s on the plane and gone.
Grey’s Anatomy is a series of feelings, but when Meredith leaves, you feel nothing
Whether plane crash, killing spree or near drowning: Grey’s Anatomy always capitalized drama as a drama series. Emotions wanted to be felt. In the wake of countless character deaths, tears flowed from the audience by the gallon. How often Meredith suffered losses or escaped the Grim Reaper himself was simply part of the emotional rollercoaster.

Grey’s Anatomys farewell party for Meredith in episode 7 season 19
Only in recent years have Grey’s Anatomy characters been released alive into freedom away from the Seattle series: Cristina went to Switzerland, Alex to Izzy, Arizona to Callie and Jackson with April to Boston. That was less exciting, but legitimate. Only the change of location has recently become increasingly Exit formula from Grey’s Anatomy. To an over-copied blueprint that Meredith is now following as well.
What’s amazing about episode 7 of season 19 is how listless and unspectacular she lets Meredith go. After 19 seasons of record-breaking history, Grey’s Anatomy lets Ellen Pompeo go with a shrug, “Bye.” That may have a method to make it easier for the fans to get out. But it does not fit the usual emotionality of the series and doesn’t live up to the biggest departure of them all.
At least we could get excited about Alex Karev’s absurd Grey’s Anatomy farewell. The way Meredith from her own series is written is far more awful. Because they’re just one leaves an empty no-matter feeling. If the show wanted to convey to us that it simply wanted to get through this step unnerved, then its mission was successful.
Grey’s Anatomy vacillates between insult and apology over Ellen Pompeo’s exit
It’s unmistakable that Grey’s Anatomy gives us a real Happy ending intentionally denied. It’s not for nothing that Meredith’s last surgery at Gray Sloan Hospital is a failure. “There is no happy ending. Because I’m still here, still alive”, says the doctor in what may be her last voice-over. That may be meant to be comforting, but after 19 seasons it feels stale.

Which is probably also due to the fact that the entire episode is partly for aggressive meta comment on Ellen Pompeo’s departure degenerated: The dialogues, which can easily be transferred to reality, oscillate between justification (“Patients have unrealistic expectations of what doctors can do”) and public insult (“I won’t beg you to love me”). Yes, it’s totally okay that the actress wants to try something new after 408 series episodes in 19 seasons. But does Grey’s Anatomy have to deny fans the necessary mourning?
“You don’t have to worry until you stop feeling the losses”, explains Meredith after her last patient dies under her hands. In that case, we should be worried about a series that never stops flat at the loss of its main character. One Burial of the series would be the better way been.
