In Destiny 2, the Lightfall DLC with the modern city of Neomuna will attract many new players in 2023. However, many are deterred by the huge range of content. If you feel the same way, don’t be discouraged. Here comes the MeinMMO guide for a trip-free entry into the Destiny universe.
Beginners in Destiny 2 have this problem: Destiny 2 has been on the market for 5 years and has delivered a steady stream of new content, stories and an evolving meta ever since. Most notably, however, the live service aspect of Destiny 2 has enabled it to create an incredibly rich and immersive world that is continually improving and changing.
For new players, however, that is often the sheer horror. You quickly lose track and often feel overwhelmed by the multitude of quests, materials and the freedom to choose where exactly to start.
But don’t worry if you feel the same way in the Destiny multiplayer FPS, with its seemingly endless loot.
With the Lightfall expansion coming February 28th, Bungie has taken further steps to address this issue. Above all, they want to help new players feel more secure and better control their progress in the game.
Beginners should start with NewLight
In Destiny 2, new Guardians enter the Tower every day to protect the Traveler and the Light. Be sure to start your journey as a Guardian with NewLight, however.
NewLight is free: The best way to start is still “NewLight”. That’s Bungie’s name for Destiny 2’s free base game. You won’t get to experience some of the biggest moments with it, but it gives you a good sense of what Destiny is and what the loot shooter is all about.
If you’ve gotten to that point where you want to experience all of Destiny’s abilities and stories, then it’s time to delve into the game’s story and editions. Mainly because Destiny 2 has several DLCs that give you access to different content.
First work up the story a bit: Basically, every guardian should know what it’s about. This is important so that you understand everything that Destiny 2 has to offer in its expansions.
The following intro cinematic to the story offers you a short throwback to the world of Destiny and is ideally suited for this.
If you then want to learn even more about the Destiny story down to the content that can be played so far, our large story overview is just what you need. She even works on the content from Destiny 1 in the short version.
Note, however, that our story article includes everything, including the DLCs that you may not have played yet.
The history of Destiny 1 and 2 up to Season 20 quickly summarized
In what order do you play the DLCs? Now you can decide which Destiny expansions you want to play. You can basically play any DLC, but the order of them is not irrelevant. However, there is now a practical overview in the game in the form of a timeline.
Here, new players can see the order in which the expansions came out, and therefore the order in which they should be played.
Do I have to buy all the DLCs? Storywise not necessarily. Destiny 2 now offers an interactive video after each expansion. Important details are summarized again there.
Only if you want all the weapons and skills should you buy all the DLCs.
First of all, it’s good to know that Destiny 2 isn’t the kind of game where the age of the content automatically determines its value. Newer extensions are not inherently better than older ones.
This saves money in Destiny 2: The so-called Legacy Edition of Destiny 2 is particularly useful for new players. This three-part package contains three DLCs at a reasonable price. With this you can already secure 3 of the 5 currently available expansions.
The Legacy Edition then includes all associated weapons and access to additional activities such as raids, exotic missions and previous equipment. And through Beyond Light, you’ll also gain access to Stasis, the Ice ability in Destiny 2.
So it’s almost an all-round carefree package, even if the story of the Forsaken DLC is no longer playable and is in the big content sky.
What happened to the Forsaken DLC and its campaign? The Forsaken DLC became a “Forsaken Pack” and only gives access to a large number of Exotics. Additionally, players can play into the Dreaming City and the Last Wish raid, as well as the Shattered Throne dungeon.
Even so, buying all the DLCs is still not a bargain for new players. The two DLCs “The Witch Queen” and “Lightfall” can currently only be purchased individually.
All editions of Lightfall can be found in our large DLC hub:

So that you don’t lose track here, the aforementioned timeline in the game also shows you what you’ve already bought. So you are not forced to buy everything at once.
We also recommend buying the deluxe editions directly. This is the least effort, because it contains everything important, including the dungeons. Buying all of these individually is much more expensive. In addition, it is always worth comparing prices with the offers of your respective provider platform.
The Destiny 2 Season Pass briefly explained: In addition to the DLCs, there is also the season pass in Destiny 2. They usually last 3 months and bring additional content and equipment for hunting. But season passes are only a good choice for those who really plan to play Destiny 2 a lot.
For the Seaspnpasses in Lightfall, we recommend purchasing the Deluxe Edition of the DLC. This is the best way to go, because all 4 season passes including the 2 fee-based dungeons are already included.
Here you will find an overview of all dungeons from Destiny 2 and you can also see which DLC you need so that you can play them.
