An 85-year-old woman has been killed by an alligator in Fort Pierce, Florida, writes BBC.

The tragedy occurred when the woman was out for a walk with her dog.

Witnesses have said that the three-meter-long creature suddenly emerged from the water and lunged at the dog.

When the woman tried to save her pet, she herself was attacked.

The dog survived the attack.

The alligator was successfully overpowered – but it took six alligator hunters to capture the animal and get it into a van.

Alligator attacks are rare in Florida, and especially fatal, according to the state’s local Department of Fisheries and Wildlife.

If this happens, however, it is best to “fight back”.

According to the authority, the animals kill victims who can be easily overpowered – if you resist, however, they will often let go and retreat.
