On Sunday, there was the opportunity to buy one of the old handmade nails that were found among the remains of the fire in Sjösås. According to the congregation, the villagers have shown an interest in bringing home a small memento from the church fire.
– It will be exciting to see how many will come. The nails cost SEK 100 each, says Inger Söderberg.
The money raised will go to charity.
Clock tower on the wish list
Sjöså’s new church in Viås burned to the ground on September 3, 2022. A crucifix could be saved from the flames, but not the baptismal font from the 13th century.
– It is the people of the village who built the church, and therefore it feels so terrible that everything should disappear in this way, says Ingela Sandford Boberg.
The village, led by Inger Söderberg and Ingela Sandford Boberg, however, already has plans for how the church ruins can be used in the future, and what will be built on the site. The parish has roughly SEK 30 million in insurance money to use, and at the top of the wish list is a bell tower.
