Quickly going viral on Tiktok, the “Borg” is a funny colorful drink made up of water, alcohol (often vodka), cheap flavorings, caffeine and electrolytes – supposed to reduce hangovers . But this mixture – seemingly playful – is extremely dangerous, according to experts.
The drink is all the rage among the youngest
On college campuses, everyone wants their “Borg.” And for good reason: the drink, easily transportable in the evening since contained in a can of water, promises a “hangover-free” tomorrow and less “risky” parties.
The Borg would indeed make it possible to control the dose of alcohol, and thus to avoid black outs, comas and other consequences of “binge drinking” evenings, frequent among the youngest.
Another advantage of the drink: the water bottle serving as a container being closed, it would prevent – or at least greatly reduce – the risk of pills hidden in the cocktail.
But in reality, behind the many alleged qualities of the drink, “Borg” is quite toxic.
“Admittedly, mixing the Borg with water is one thing. But, if you add caffeine, it will dehydrate the body and negate the effects of water. As for electrolytes, they will not reverse the damage caused by alcohol.“, warns Pr Pantea Farahmand, assistant professor in the department of child and adolescent psychiatry at NYU Langone Health, interviewed by the media Healthline.
