When a sequel to the sci-fi hit I Am Legend starring Will Smith was announced in 2022, one question in particular arose: how will the star return after his character in the first part died at the end is? There was already a theory that has now been officially confirmed.

I Am Legend 2 refers to the alternate ending of Part 1
As reported by Screen Rant, producer Akiva Goldsman opened up about the development of I Am Legend 2 in a new Deadline interview, confirming what many have already suspected. The sci-fi sequel ignores the end of the theatrical version and refers to the alternate ending later released with the home theater version of the hit film.
In the theatrical version of I Am Legend Smith’s main character, Robert Neville, sacrifices himself at the end even with a hand grenade fighting a horde of zombie-like infected.
At that time, an alternative ending was released on DVD, in which Robert realized the attackers’ goal and one peaceful exit reached, in which the infected want to form their own community and finally leave the survivors alone.
This end that itself sticks more closely to the novel by Richard Matheson, now officially canon for I Am Legend 2. That clarifies Smith’s return in the sequel. Also starring alongside the star is Michael B. Jordan in the sequel, which producer Akiva Goldsman says will take place many years after the first installment. I Am Legend 2 is expected to hit theaters in 2025.
