Next week will be exactly one year since Russia launched a large-scale offensive in Ukraine. According to former ambassador René Nyberg, a ceasefire would lead to the continuation of the war later.

Former ambassador René Nyberg does not believe in peace between Russia and Ukraine if the war is not resolved to the end on the battlefield.
– Nothing would be such a bad solution as a ceasefire. It would only lead to Russia furiously preparing for the next attack, and then we would move on.
Nyberg predicts that Ukraine is not going to give up the territories occupied by Russia, but will launch a counterattack at some point in the war.
– I don’t see any other option than that the war has to end.
The discussion on the consequences of the ceasefire in A-Talk was opened by a leading researcher Sinikukka Saari. In Saari’s opinion, the war will not end if Russia is not the clear loser of the war.
– The war would not necessarily continue the next day, but it could continue in a few years. We must be honest that if such a situation is frozen, war and instability in Europe will continue.
According to Saari, a credible deterrent that would bring lasting peace is needed against Russia.
– It could even be possible that solutions will be seen already this year, but the most common estimates favor the continuation of the war. Usually wars last about five months or they are really much longer. Now we are clearly in the latter situation.
