Due to the ongoing economic crisis in Lebanon since 2019, protests against the restrictions on withdrawals and attacks on bank branches continue. The depositors, who came together in the capital Beirut, attacked the bank branches and set them on fire. The demonstrators, who burned tires and blocked the roads, targeted at least 6 bank branches. A spokesperson for Depositors Outcry, a lobby that represents depositors, said protests broke out after the Lebanese lira fell to a record today. A large number of firefighters and security forces were dispatched to the areas where the protests broke out.
The Lebanese lira has lost 98 percent of its value since the economic crisis that broke out in the country in 2019. Lebanon took steps to receive a bailout package from the International Monetary Fund in April 2022, but about a year later, Lebanon failed to carry out the reforms required for the package. (UAV)
