Italy has already said before that it aims for the EU to soften its goal.
Italy harshly criticizes the EU’s plan to only allow the sale of zero-emission cars from 2035.
The decision would practically lead to the end of sales of new combustion engine cars.
Italian Minister of Transport, leader of the far-right La Lega party Matteo Salvini calls the plan a suicide with disastrous consequences.
– Of course we all want clean water, good air quality and a cleaner environment, but it should not lead to the dismissal of millions of workers and the destruction of thousands of companies, Salvini said.
Italy is a major automotive country, where Fiat and Alfa Romeo cars are manufactured, among others. The sector employs 268,300 people in 5,135 companies in Italy (you switch to another service)and its size corresponds to more than five percent of the entire gross national product of Italy.
– This ideological electric car fundamentalism is suicide and a direct gift to China, Salvini, acting as deputy prime minister, continued.
Italy is already the foreign minister Antonio Tajani verbally stated that he is striving for the EU to soften its goal.
According to Tajani, Italy intends to propose that the sale of combustion engine cars be reduced by 90 percent from 2035 onwards.
The registration of electric cars in Italy fell by more than a quarter last year. Only 3.7 percent of cars registered in Italy last year were electric cars.
