The parliament in Moldova has, as expected, voted Dorin Recean as the new prime minister after Natalia Gavrilita, who resigned suddenly last week.

Dorin Recean is a 48-year-old economist who is considered pro-Western. He was previously a defense and security adviser to President Maia Sandu, who on Monday accused Russia of a long-running plan to topple the country’s EU-friendly government.

After Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi warned that Moldova is “next in line” in Moscow’s war plans, the Moldovan government resigned.

The new government led by Dorin Recean retains the foreign, interior and defense ministers.

– Moldova has vulnerabilities linked to the war in Ukraine. And those vulnerabilities must be handled with the utmost care, says the new head of government, who was also interior minister from 2012 to 2015.

For many years, Russia has been enabling a breakaway government in the region of Transnistria in eastern Moldova and has militaries there.
