In a video, the developers of the 2023 upcoming survival MMO Nightingale talk about dedicated servers and why they are.
What is Nightingale? Nightingale (PC) is an upcoming solo or co-op PvE survival game by Inflexion Games.
Nightingale is characterized above all by its setting: A Victorian fantasy world is mixed with elements from industrialized England as well as fairies and monsters.
The gameplay focus in Nightingale is on exploration, crafting and collaborative building. Your goal is to explore a new world and build a life there. Your old world, in turn, will soon be destroyed by a magical storm.
However, surviving in the new world is not without its dangers and new dangers are looming everywhere.

What are dedicated servers? In video games, a dedicated server is a server offered within a game by the developer. Players can join such a server individually and independently of other players or their connection.
Alternatively, there are so-called peer-to-peer connections in which a player acts as the host of the session. In this case, the data traffic runs via this player, which is why the connection depends on said player. This can lead to lag and disconnects, which is why dedicated servers in Call of Duty are even considered “the holy grail of shooters”.
Why are dedicated servers so important for developers? In a video on YouTube, Nightingale’s Community Manager, Steph Herdman, talks about dedicated servers.
In the video, she says dedicated servers have the advantage that players don’t have to wait for a host if they want to play online. This is partly different in similar games. There, one player is the host of the multiplayer session and the other players can only continue playing on the game world if this host is online.
With dedicated servers, however, players in Nightingale should be able to join the game world at any time and not be dependent on the presence of a host.
According to Herdman, dedicated servers are planned for Nightingale’s Early Access launch. This is part of the studio’s principle and is “fundamental”:
For Nightingale, we will have dedicated, official servers at the start of Early Access. This means that if you play with friends and invite them to your realm and set it as your rest point, each of you will be able to start that realm at any point, regardless of who is online.
It’s all included in the game’s offering because it’s fundamental to our studio principle of ‘Fantastic Spaces, Meaningful Places’.
The survival MMO Nightingale is scheduled to be released in Early Access on Steam in the first half of 2023 and is one of 8 new survival games to look forward to in 2023.
