China is calling on the US to carry out a “thorough investigation” into what it calls several intrusions into Chinese airspace by US balloons.
“The United States has sent a number of balloons that have flown around the world, and then illegally flown both over Chinese airspace and over other countries on at least ten occasions,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin at an appearance on Tuesday.
“The United States should conduct a thorough investigation of the events and provide an explanation to China,” Wang added.
This call comes after China claimed on Monday that US balloons had repeatedly entered Chinese airspace since January 2022.
The already strained relations between the countries have worsened in recent weeks after a suspected Chinese spy balloon was shot down off the US east coast in early February. Subsequently, a further number of flying objects have been shot down over North American airspace – but where they came from is still unclear.
