Finland’s World Cup skiing team was announced at the beginning of the week. The team did not contain any big surprises, but two of the national team’s regular names from recent years did not fit into the lineup: Markus Vuorela and Katri Lylynperä.
On Sunday, Vuorela skied in Jämi’s Jänte team in Vantaa’s Finnish Cup relays. Vuorela skied the second stage in the team, which was third in the race.
– I’ve had a pretty relaxed week. I haven’t been so stressed about skiing. Sure, I’ve trained twice a day, but I’ve done a lot more, which has been nice, Vuorela told Urheilu.
According to Vuorela, the reason behind the more relaxed approach is partly the disappointment of not qualifying for the World Cup team.
– It was a big disappointment, of course. It has been an even season, but there was no sharp peak. It was a bit annoying, Vuorela said.
– Let’s try to put the pieces together and be on the map in the World Cups at the end of the season.
Katri Lylynperä edged Vuokat into third place
Lylynperä pulled a hard anchor part in the women’s relay. He lifted the Vuokatti Ski Team to third in the final straight when he overtook the Visa Ski Team Emmi Lämsän on the final stretch. On Saturday, in the traditional normal trip, Lylynperä had clearly lost to Lämsä.
– Yesterday was not our day on the track. Today was better, Lylynperä said.
Lylynperä described being eliminated from the World Championship team as a “not nice situation”.
– Now I’m doing a little research on where to compete next. Most recently at Helsinki Ski Weeks, Lylynperä stated.
The women’s relay was overwhelmingly won by the Kainuu Ski Club. Anni Alakoski would tear with another difference to the others such a big difference that Johanna Ukkola just sealed the win.
Alakoski was a double winner at the Finnish Cup weekend in Vantaa, as he won Saturday’s 10 km race.
– Even I was a little surprised how well it went today. Probably because he has been able to train so well, Alakoski said.
Alakoski, who belongs to the B national team, skied four times in the World Cup at the beginning of winter and competed in the Tour de Ski until he had to stop it due to illness.
– There have been all kinds of health problems. Now they are left behind. The body is working right now. That’s the main thing, Alakoski told Urheilu on Saturday.
