Over 100 arrested in Turkey – accused of fraudulent construction
Demolished houses in Hatay in southern Turkey. Photo: IHA/AP
Turkey has arrested over 100 people for crimes linked to earthquake protection of buildings, writes New York Times and refers to the Turkish news agency Anadolu.
Several thousand buildings have collapsed in southern Turkey after the powerful earthquake – including high-rise buildings and brand new apartment buildings. Many have expressed anger at the poor build quality.
It has been speculated that many of the razed houses were fraudulently built, and that this contributed to the fact that the death toll after the earthquake is now up to 24,000. A figure that is expected to rise.
The Turkish Ministry of Justice has ordered all affected provinces to establish “earthquake crime” departments.
The provinces are also being asked to appoint prosecutors to bring charges against all “building contractors and those responsible” for collapsed buildings who did not follow the rules established after the earthquake disaster in the country in 1999.
SMHI warns of gale force winds and snow
SMHI has issued an orange warning in the Lapland mountains.
It applies from Sunday morning to Monday evening.
– We are expecting quite large amounts of snow, together with the wind it can be really difficult with non-existent visibility and difficult to orientate and stand upright, says meteorologist Ida Dahlström, meteorologist at SMHI to TT.
Furthermore, SMHI advises against going out on the mountain during the period that the warning applies.
There is also a great risk of frostbite for people who find themselves in vulnerable situations, according to Dahlström.
– People are strongly advised against going out on the mountain, this is not weather that you should be out in, she tells TT.
Man disappeared from residence – found dead in basement
A man in his 60s was found dead in November in the basement of a residence in Gothenburg for people with psychosocial problems, writes GP.
He had then been missing for five days.
– They didn’t look in the basement at first, because it’s usually locked there, but for some reason it turned out that the door was open, says Karin Jämting, socially responsible coordinator, to GP.
Police suspect no crime in connection with the death.
Now the accommodation has made a lex Sarah report to the Health and Care Inspectorate.
Partly because of the death, partly because the man had previously been subjected to threats and violence at the residence – for which nothing had been done.
The university’s website suffered from an IT attack
Several websites were subjected to an overload attack on Friday.
Among other things, several Swedish hospital websites were down.
On Saturday, Gothenburg University’s website had also suffered a hacker attack, writes GP. Something that the university itself confirms on its website.
Other universities were also affected by the attack.
The group Anonymos Sudan, which claimed responsibility for Friday’s attack, also claims this attack, saying it is revenge for the Koran burnings.
“The Swedish education sector has been shut down due to the Koran burning,” the group writes on its Telegram channel.
At 3 p.m., Gothenburg University’s website was working again.
