No more cannabis smoking on the streets of Amsterdam
Amsterdam bans cannabis smoking in public places in the city center, reports SVT Nyheter.
According to the Dutch news agency DPA, the ban applies to the De Wallen area, the most famous of the so-called red light districts and with widespread brothel activity.
Restaurants and bars are also forced to close earlier.
The purpose is to increase security in the area. Residents have long complained about drunkenness and cannabis smoking. Cannabis tourism also attracts drug dealers and crime, according to a press release about the decision.
The ban comes into effect in mid-May.

Politician attacked in lift – saved by his coffee
American politician Angie Craig, member of the Democrats in the House of Representatives, was attacked in the elevator on her way from her overnight apartment in Washington on Thursday morning.
The attacker demanded access to her flat and when Craig refused he punched her in the face and grabbed her.
The politician managed to get the man to flee by throwing his take away coffee at him and shouting for help when the lift stopped on a floor below.
With the help of surveillance cameras, a suspect, identified as Kendred Khalil Hamlin, was arrested on Friday.
He has previously been suspected of burglary.
Angie Craig coped well under the circumstances and is now resting at home in Minnesota.
– My morning coffee really saved the day yesterday, but not in the way I thought, she says according to CBS News.
Pig slaughter is increasing – other meat is decreasing
Last year, 2,672,400 pigs were slaughtered in Sweden, according to a report from the Swedish Agricultural Agency. It is the highest figure since 2011 and an increase of one percent from 2021. Translated into weight, this is over 250,000 tonnes of pigs.
For other animal species – beef, sheep, lamb and poultry – the trend is downward.

Freed prisoners can be taken to Spain
Spain has decided to offer citizenship to more than 200 prisoners who were released by Nicaragua on Thursday and brought to the United States, announced Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares.
Among those released are members of Nicaragua’s opposition and regime critics. Nicaragua’s parliament has voted to strip the freed people of their citizenship.
According to Albares, those released must now be contacted and the citizenship process promised to go quickly. (TT)
Four arrested after crackdown on tattoo artists
Four people were arrested this week when the Ecocrime Agency (EMB) raided tattooists in Norrbotten, the agency writes.
The police’s task force, the Tax Agency as well as EBM’s staff participated in what is described as extensive house searches at ten addresses in Luleå, Umeå and Linköping.
“We assess that the tattoo businesses that are the subject of our preliminary investigation have connections to serious organized crime,” says chamber prosecutor Mikael Bäckström at EBM. (TT)
Friday depression on Wall Street – worst week since December
There is still concern on the US stock market.
The broad index S&P closed at plus 0.2 percent in Friday trading – but it was still the biggest weekly loss since December, writes TT.
The Dow Jones industrial index rose 0.5 percent and the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index retreated 0.6 percent.
There is great concern on the stock market that the US central bank, the Fed, will continue with its inflation-fighting interest rate policy for longer than expected.
E45 shut down after accident
A car with three people in it has driven off the E45 at Bjälverud north of Sunne.
An effort with rescue services, healthcare and police is on site.
It is still unclear what the damage looks like.
The road is closed in both directions during the rescue work at the site.
Update: No one should be seriously injured. The road is reopened to traffic.
Car fire on Essingeleden
A car burns on Essingeleden in Stockholm.
– It is a fully developed fire in a passenger car. It is on the E4 between Stora Essingen and Gröndal in the southbound direction, says Ola Österling at the police in the Stockholm region.
Police and emergency services are on site.
There are no reports of any injuries.
There will be a very large traffic impact on the site. The police are currently directing traffic.
“Object” shot down over Alaska
An “object” is said to have been shot down by American fighter aircraft over Alaska. This allegedly happened after President Joe Biden ordered it, according to the White House.
It has not yet been stated in detail what the “object” will be about.
This is reported by the Reuters news agency.

Recently, the US Air Force shot down a Chinese spy balloon.
According to Reuters, today’s downed “object” over Alaska must have been “much smaller” than the Chinese spy balloon and had the same size as a small passenger car.

However, I think that it can be reassuring that Säpo is aware of threats directed at Sweden and that the police have initiated a special event to keep extra surveillance in relevant places.
