Audition hides gruesome horror behind a harmless romantic drama

Takashi Miike’s film revolves around the widower Shigeharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi) who is looking for a new partner seven years after the death of his wife. At the staged audition of a film producer friend of his, he meets Asami (Eihi Shiina) and immediately falls in love. A romance begins between the two, which slowly menacing abysses brings to light.

Miike first takes a lot of time to characterize his characters with distanced camera positions and reserved background music. In addition, Audition offers satirical digs at Japanese culture even humor.

But the final act surprises and disturbs all the more as a surreal dream-reality interplay. Between shocking torture excesses, mysterious hallucinations and merciless terror cinema Audition turns into a violent horror shocker. Above all, the sound of a piano string cutting through flesh and bones will never be forgotten.
