“I think it’s illogical”

Elvira Öberg is Sweden’s big hope for gold in the Biathlon World Cup.
Now the 23-year-old opens up about the loving support from home.
And reveals why she chose to keep boyfriend Axel a secret.

The Biathlon World Cup is in full swing and Sweden’s brightest star and great hope for gold is called Elvira Öberg. The 23-year-old was a big success last year with an Olympic gold and two Olympic silvers in Beijing.

Öberg’s success

Lillasyster Öberg also racked up podiums and victories at the World Cup and finally came second in the overall World Cup after four individual World Cup victories and a total of eight podiums. So far this season, there have been three World Cup victories and a total of five podiums if you look at both individual and team competitions.

Now she is chasing the very first WC medals of her career in German Oberhof. The last year has really been a transition for her both sportingly and privately as she has become a public figure, a role she is not entirely comfortable in.
– It’s a bit of both. Since you are performing at such a high level, perhaps it should be that you have earned the public’s attention. That way it’s fun, I want to be a role model and an ambassador for biathlon, but it’s not always fun when people think you should be available just for that. Sometimes it can be nice to be more at peace, but I can’t be to the same extent anymore. It’s something you have to accept as an elite athlete if it goes well, says Elvira in an interview with SportExpressen.

Elvira’s love

Considering the love drama that her older sister Hanna Öberg became involved in 2021, Elvira Öberg is therefore restrained with what she shares about her private life in interviews and social media. What happened to Hanna was that she broke up with her boyfriend and teammate Jesper Nelin and found new love national team colleague Martin Ponsiluoma.

At the same time as Nelin became Ponsiluoma’s ex-girlfriend together Fanny Johansson, who is also a biathlete. Therefore, it took a long time before Elvira Öberg finally made her boyfriend public Axel Frost.
– All of a sudden there can be an interest in things like, even if I think it’s illogical, who I’m with. There may be headlines if I choose to share, maybe not at once but later and then it may be difficult to take something back in the future if you wanted to, says the Swedish biathlon star to the evening newspaper about the decision to keep the boyfriend a secret.

It was at the beginning of this season that Elvira published a picture, see it below, of both of them and revealed her love for 27-year-old Axel, who is not a biathlete but has a connection to winter sports and works as a trainer at the Alpine Ski Pool.
– It’s nice to have someone at home that you can talk to. And it’s good that he’s a little out of this world too, when you’re in the biathlon bubble yourself, says the 23-year-old in the interview.
