The death toll continues to rise after the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. Now 19,300 deaths have been confirmed, AP reports – a death toll that has thus passed the disaster in Fukushima in 2011.
At the same time, the increasingly desperate search for survivors continues – which can best be described as a battle against the clock. The more time that passes, the less the chances of rescuing people buried in the race masses.
It is usually said that after three days there is a little over 20 percent chance that someone has survived in a scenario like this. By day five, it is about a few percent.
Two days after the earthquake, rescue workers managed to find Abdulalim Muani pinned under his destroyed house. He is the only survivor of his family.
There is currently no information about injured Swedes, writes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an email to TV4 Nyheterna.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consulate General are in contact with Swedes who are in the area and relatives of people there, but currently have no knowledge of injured or deceased Swedes in Turkey or nearby areas. Swedes on site are asked to follow the advice and instructions of local authorities, contact relatives and register on the Swedish list.”
