Relatives found a newborn child in the ruins of a collapsed house in northern Syria.
A newborn child was rescued from the ruins of an earthquake-ravaged house in the town of Jindires in northern Syria on Tuesday.
The child was so young that the umbilical cord still connected the child and the mother.
According to news agency AFP, the child was found by his relative. This says that he found the child when he was digging through the ruins of a collapsed five-story house and heard a sound from there.
The child’s mother had died in the earthquake. In addition to the mother, the child’s father and siblings also died.
The child’s relatives took the child to a hospital in the nearby city of Afrin.
The doctor at the hospital tells AFP that the child had a bad cold when he arrived at the hospital, with bruises and contusions, but that the child’s condition is now stable.
Two strong earthquakes struck southern Turkey on Monday, causing thousands of deaths in Turkey and Syria. At least 1,800 people had died in Syria by Tuesday evening. In addition, tens of thousands of people have been injured.
Unicef estimated on Tuesday that the earthquakes could also have taken the lives of thousands of children.
In addition to AFP, the news agency AP and the American media CNN report on the incident.
