2022, which started above the averages of the last 10 years for the automotive industry, is on a regression curve compared to the previous year.
Automotive Industry Association (OSD) recently shared the production and export numbers and market data for January 2022. In the table, it is seen that the total production in January decreased by 15 percent compared to the same month of the previous year and was realized as 90 thousand 520 units. Automobile production, on the other hand, amounted to 47,778 units with a significant loss of 31 percent. Together with the tractor production, the total production reaches 94 thousand 114 units. In the first month of the year, commercial vehicle production increased by 14 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. While production in the heavy commercial vehicle group increased by 12 percent in January, the production in the light commercial vehicle group increased by 15 percent.
Automotive exports decreased by 12 percent compared to January 2021
Looking at the market, compared to January 2021, the commercial vehicle market increased by 7 percent, the light commercial vehicle market increased by 9 percent, and the heavy commercial vehicle market decreased by 1 percent. Considering the base effect, the commercial vehicle market in January was at the level of 2017. In January, the total market decreased by 12 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, at the level of 39 thousand 692 units. Looking at the averages of the last 10 years, in January 2022, the total market increased by 18 percent, the automobile market by 21 percent, the light commercial vehicle market by 12 percent, while the heavy commercial vehicle market decreased by 3 percent. In January, the share of domestic vehicles in the automobile market was 39 percent, while the share of domestic vehicles in the light commercial vehicle market was 66 percent.

In January, we see that automotive exports decreased by 13 percent on a unit basis compared to the same period of 2021, and amounted to 67 thousand 799 units. Automobile exports, on the other hand, decreased by 27 percent to 34 thousand 999 units. In the same period, tractor exports increased by 11 percent and were recorded as 1,371 units. According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), automotive industry exports maintained its first place with a 13 percent share in total exports in January. In this period, total automotive exports amounted to 2.1 billion dollars, while automobile exports decreased by 22 percent to 623 million dollars.
