While analyzing the latest beta version of WhatsApp, knowledgeable leakers from the WABetaInfo site discovered information about backing up to Google Drive (gdrive). As shown in the image below, it is about quota soon reached, then exceeded.
This would therefore mean that Google will take WhatsApp backups into account when calculating the amount of data stored in its cloud (15 GB maximum in free mode). Until now, this was not the case, which gave Google’s online storage a huge advantage over Apple’s.
The use of backups in the cloud makes it possible, for example, to keep your conversations if your smartphone is lost, stolen or damaged.
For the moment, neither Google nor WhatsApp have confirmed the information and specified when the free service will end. It’s also unclear if WhatsApp backups will count towards the free 15GB, or if there will be a specific free quota assigned to them.
Last June, Google ended the free storage of photos for its Google Photos service. The only exception is for owners of Pixel 3a through Pixel 5 smartphones, who use Space Saver mode for save photos and videos. If you want more storage, you will have to pay through the Google One subscription service.
